FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is a Facial?
A facial is a professional cleansing, purifying, and beautifying treatment of the skin on the face and neck. There are several variations of facials, including mini facials, detoxifying facials, anti-aging facials, facials that highlight special ingredients, like herbs or antioxidants, moisturizing facials, pore-refining facials, aromatherapy facials, and many more. A typical facial deeply cleanses and freshens the skin by exfoliating away dead skin cells. The objective of a classic European facial is to maintain soft, unblemished, well-hydrated skin.
Who Can Benefit From a Facial?
No matter how sensitive or hard to treat your skin is, you can still benefit from a facial because any facial can be suited to fit your individual skin care needs. If you have sensitive skin, only gentle cleansing and moisturizing products will be used. If your goal is to clear up your acne, your esthetician can guide you toward a facial that will help you achieve that goal. Be sure to communicate clearly with your skin care professional exactly what you want to get out of your facial, so your therapist can do his or her best to accommodate
What is a Chemical Peel?
Chemical peels are used to remove the outer-most layer of the skin and reveal the fresh, less-wrinkled layer below. In these procedures, a chemical formula is placed on the skin, which then peels off, eliminating dead cells and leaving the skin with clarity, luminosity, and showing an improvement in fine lines.
Who Can Benefit from Chemical Peels?
Chemical peels are used for age management and effectively improve the feel and appearance of the skin by reducing fine lines and wrinkles caused by sun exposure, aging, and genetics. They can also treat age spots, freckles, and other superficial hyperpigmentation. Most skin colors and types can benefit from chemical peels, though it is best to check with your esthetician about which peel might be right for you. If you're taking acne medication, Retin-A or Accutane, talk to your esthetician about stopping the medication before and during treatment to avoid complications.
What is Exfoliation?
Exfoliation is a skin care therapy in which the outer layers of dead skin cells are gently sloughed off with the use of an abrasive tool or product, such as a loofah sponge or brush, or a skin cleanser containing sea salt or ground nut shells. Any area of the skin can be exfoliated, but it is important to exfoliate your face using products intended for your skin type.
Why Should I Exfoliate?
Exfoliation speeds up the skin's natural process of shedding dead skin cells and prevents pimples and black heads by keeping pores clear of impu-rities. If pores and sebaceous glands are blocked by dead skin cells, buildup of debris can cause blemishes to develop.
Types of Exfoliators
There are three ways to exfoliate: 1. using a tool that scrubs, like a loofah or washcloth, 2. using a product that contains abrasive parti-cles, like a walnut facial scrub, or 3. using a product that contains gentle exfoliating acids, like alpha-hydroxy, beta-hydroxy, or salicylic acids. The first two options require rubbing action on the skin. The third does not. Instead, the product removes the outer layers of skin by reacting chemically with dead skin cells.
What is Brazilian Waxing?
Many people are familiar with bikini waxing, which removes pubic and leg hair that would otherwise show when a bathing suit is worn. Brazilian waxing got its start with the daring bathing suits worn by both sexes on Brazil's sunny beaches. Brazilian waxing is now common practice in the United States and isn't just for use with bathing suits, but is preferred by many simply for the sleek feeling a good waxing provides. The treatment involves waxing off all frontal pubic and labial hair for women and all genital hair for men, including that on the penis and scrotum. Some clients request hair on the inner and outer buttocks be waxed off also. |
